Kabul
North-West Thermal Plant
The NW Kabul
thermal power plant was completed by ABB (Alstom) at a cost of about
$22.8 million in 1985. This 45 MW power plant is located in Kabul’s
Khair Khana district and consists of two gas turbines having a
capacity of 21.8 MW (unit 3) and 23.2 MW (unit 4). This plant was
originally designed and manufactured by Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) of
Switzerland. Presently, Alstom from Switzerland handles all service
and parts for ABB equipment. Due to the ongoing wars and civil
strife in the country this power plant was neglected and not
maintained properly. USAID is funding and is still assisting in
refurbishment and maintenance of this plant. In addition USAID has
been paying for the diesel fuel consumed at this plant.
The North Substation. This sub-station is located in the northern part of Kabul
Khair Khana with a capacity of 80 MVA; the input/output voltage is 110/15
kVA. The sub-station is functional
Currently unit 3 is reserved.
